Located on the grounds of the former Canoga Park Fire Station, the Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Society houses items relating to the history of the San Fernando Valley. The collection includes historical documents, pamphlets, photos, and ephemera from local organizations. The museum will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing next year. During the early 1900s, the area was home to several aerospace firms, such as Rocketdyne, which was an integral part of the Space Shuttle program. During the 1960s, residents could hear the engine tests of Apollo rockets as they passed by.

In the early 1900s, wheat, walnuts, and citrus were the main crops in the area. The completion of an aqueduct in 1913 increased agriculture. The area also had a high school, library, and water tower. In 1916, the town was annexed by Los Angeles and was named Canoga. In 1917, it was renamed Canoga Park. Its name was later changed to West Hills in 1988.
